An oasis of peace in the monastery garden
06/2023 The Begijnhof in your photo exudes that quiet, almost timeless tranquility so typical of this place. The name refers to the Beguines, a religious community of women who lived in a semi-monastic manner since the Middle Ages—devout, communal, but without strict monastic vows. Their daily life was characterized by work, education, and care, especially for the sick and needy.
The building complex itself originated in the 13th century and has been expanded and renovated repeatedly over the centuries. The whitewashed houses, the clear architecture, and the enclosed courtyard still convey the feeling of a secluded, protected living space. The garden at the center was not only ornamental, but also served as a place of peace and contemplation – a green heart in the middle of the city.
Geographically, the Begijnhof is located on the southern edge of Bruges' old town, just a few steps from the Minnewater. Anyone entering through the gate automatically leaves the hustle and bustle behind and enters a small world that has remained almost unchanged for centuries.
