06/2023 In the first light of day, the castle square seems bathed in a quiet magic. The richly decorated town hall of Bruges – to the left of the center of the picture – with its delicate turrets and magnificent neo-Gothic facade, stands out clearly against the warm morning sky. The sun is just rising over the roofs of the old town, its golden light gliding over the historic buildings and softly illuminating the stone ornaments.
The castle square itself is one of the oldest places in Bruges: As early as the Middle Ages, it was the center of power and administration for the city. Around the square are grouped important buildings such as the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the former Brugse Vrije courthouse, which together form an impressive ensemble spanning centuries of Flemish history.
At this early hour, when the streets are still quiet and the light gently shapes the facades, Bruges reveals its most poetic side – timeless, dignified, and full of historical depth.
