Charming courtyard
06/2023 The courtyard of St. John's Hospital unfolds its full historical depth in your photo: quiet benches, well-tended flowerbeds, and behind them, the striking brick gables of the old pharmacy. For centuries, this pharmacy was a central part of the hospital's operations—here, medicinal herbs were stored, ointments were mixed, and medicines were prepared for the sick and pilgrims.
St. John's Hospital itself is one of the oldest surviving hospitals in Europe. Since the 12th century, it has served as a place of care, run by brothers and sisters dedicated to the well-being of the needy. The buildings surrounding the courtyard reflect this long history: medieval brick architecture, later complemented by Gothic and Baroque elements.
Geographically, the complex is located on the southwestern edge of Brugg's old town, just a few steps from the Church of Our Lady. Anyone entering the courtyard immediately senses the special blend of tranquility, history, and the impressive steadfastness of a place that has served humanity for almost 900 years.
