Old town flair in Bruges
06/2023 The photo wonderfully captures the cozy flair of this Bruges street scene: cobblestones, narrow lanes, historic facades – and right in the middle, the Gruuthuse Hof, whose striking stepped gables immediately catch the eye. The outdoor terrace, which blends almost seamlessly into the streetscape, reinforces this typically Flemish feeling of intimacy, warmth, and vibrant city life.
The building itself is one of the city's older townhouses and takes its name from the nearby Gruuthuse, the former aristocratic estate of the influential Van Gruuthuse family. In the Middle Ages, "Gruut" referred to a herbal mixture used as beer seasoning – a testament to the economic importance of trade and brewing in Bruges.
Today, the Gruuthuse Hof is located just steps from the Liebfrauenkirche complex and the Gruuthuse Museum, right in the heart of the historic city. It combines culinary tradition with the charm of a centuries-old house and is a popular spot to soak up the atmosphere of Bruges in a relaxed setting.
