Dark tunnel
06/2023 The dark passageway at Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges feels like a silent transition between two worlds – from the bustling urban space into the centuries-old history of one of Europe's oldest hospitals. Founded in the 12th century, Sint-Janshospitaal served for generations as a place of care for the sick, pilgrims, and the needy. The massive brick walls, narrow passageways, and low vaults still speak of a medieval daily life characterized by care, faith, and hard work.
The passageway itself was once part of the internal network of the monastery and hospital: a protected, shaded corridor connecting buildings, courtyards, and work areas. Anyone walking through today immediately feels the special atmosphere of this place – a mixture of silence, history and the impressive permanence of Flemish brick architecture.
