Silent guardian by the water
06/2023 The Poertoren in Bruges looks like a silent guardian by the water in your picture – and that's exactly what it was for centuries. The striking brick tower with its pointed roof is part of Bruges' medieval city fortifications and stands on the Minnewater, a romantic waterway on the southern edge of the old town. Originally, the tower served in the 14th century as part of the defenses that controlled access to the city via the waterways.
Its name derives from the Dutch word "poort" for gate, as this was once an important access point to the city. The tower was part of a system of locks, walls, and watchtowers that guaranteed Bruges' trade and security – a crucial foundation for the city's economic rise in the Middle Ages.
Today, the Poertoren is a picturesque relic of this past. The small stone bridge in front, adorned with flowers, and the lush vegetation all around make the spot a popular photo subject and a tranquil counterpoint to the bustling town center. Anyone strolling along here gets a direct impression of how closely history and landscape are intertwined in Brügge.
