Mosque from the 18th century
03/2026 This photograph shows the mosque in the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens, this time framed by the decorative arch of a garden gate. The sightline directs the eye straight to the central domed structure, whose harmonious proportions and delicate ornamentation impressively reflect the Orientalist architecture of the late 18th century. The complex was erected under Elector Carl Theodor as an expression of the intellectual openness and architectural curiosity of the Enlightenment.
The location in the southern part of the garden was deliberately chosen: the mosque forms a striking focal point within the expansive garden composition. The manicured lawn and the tranquil surroundings enhance the impact of the building, which remains one of the most characteristic and surprising elements of the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens.
