Luxury tiles in the garden house
03/2026 The Porcelain Pavilion in the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens is one of the most charming small structures in the grounds and is situated on the edge of the northern part of the garden, nestled in a tranquil, green setting. Built in the 18th century, this small pavilion originally served as a decorative retreat and a place for social gatherings in keeping with the garden culture of the time.
The interior is particularly impressive, as your photo shows: the walls are completely covered with blue and white faience tiles, each depicting small scenes, ornaments, or everyday life. These tiles were of Dutch origin and were a highly sought-after luxury item in the 18th century. They lend the room its unique, almost fairytale-like character.
Through the open doors, the view opens onto the carefully designed garden area with a central vase – a deliberately staged interplay of interior and exterior space that impressively reflects the elegance and attention to detail of the Schwetzingen garden.
