Apollo and Art
03/2026 The Temple of Apollo is one of the striking follies in the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens and is situated at the end of a strictly symmetrical vista in the northern part of the park. It was built in the late 18th century as part of the garden's Neoclassical expansion. The round temple, with its dome and central statue of the god Apollo, symbolizes the union of art, harmony, and Enlightenment ideals that characterize the garden as a whole.
In the foreground of the complex are the characteristic sphinx figures that flank the path to the temple. They draw on motifs from Egyptian antiquity and lend the scene a solemn, almost mythological atmosphere. Together with the temple, they form an impressive ensemble that showcases the diversity and design sophistication of the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens.
