Tiles in the porcelain house

Tiles from the Netherlands

03/2026 The porcelain pavilion in the Schwetzingen Palace Gardens lies somewhat hidden in the northern part of the grounds and is one of the most charming small architectural structures of the 18th century. Originally, it served as a decorative retreat and a venue for intimate garden parties—very much in keeping with the courtly garden culture under Elector Carl Theodor. Your picture shows the interior wall covering of the pavilion: a dense arrangement of blue and white faience tiles, each depicting small scenes, landscapes, figures, or maritime motifs. These tiles come predominantly from the Netherlands, where such Delftware was produced with great craftsmanship in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were considered a precious import and were deliberately used in Schwetzingen to give the pavilion an exotic, elegant, and at the same time playful character.
