The best sunset in the world
02/2020 If there is a hit list of special places for sunsets, then Oia on Santorini is probably at the top. If you search for Santorini on Instagram, you are sure to find some pictures of exactly this view.
However, it is not quite as romantic as the view suggests. The photo was taken in the crowd of hundreds of other tourists crowded together on a small viewing platform in an old monastery complex.
Fira on Santorini
Fira is the capital of Santorini. The city itself is nothing special compared to the other places. Here you can just take a nice walk from the Hotel Atlantis along the cliff up to the Petros M. Nomikos Conference Center. The photo shows the view from Irini Cafe & Restaurant. There you could enjoy something cool to drink in the partial shade with a wonderful view.
Excavations of Akrotiri
The excavations of the prehistoric city of Akrotiri pleasantly surprised me. The facility is completely covered and air-conditioned. The city, like Pompei, was preserved by a volcanic eruption. Except that this city was even older than Pompei. In addition to the exciting excavations, there were also videos with 3D reconstructions of the city and individual houses.
Pyrgos Callistis
The town of Pyrgos Kallistis has a lot to offer. The old town is located on an almost conical mountain. In addition to beautiful streets, a few churches and a fortress, there are also old Venetian palaces. These are very nice to look at. The Saint George Church on the old fortress also offers a nice photo spot. You just have to be patient here, because someone is constantly walking into your picture.
The Venetian castle in Emporio
Right next to our great accommodation, the Vima Villa in Emporio, is the old Venetian castle. It is very nicely decorated and there are now some holiday apartments in the fortress. A walk through the small streets of the old town is definitely worth it.
Afterwards you can continue your journey to the beach. The beach in Emporio is not quite as touristy as Kamari Beach. But I see that as a clear advantage. A good restaurant on the beach is Forty One right on the beach in an old tomato factory.
