Waterfall with red stripes
06/2021 Hengifoss waterfall is the fourth tallest waterfall in Iceland. With its red stripes in the rock, it has another special feature. The red stripes are formed by layers of clay containing iron.
The clay layers at Hengifoss consist of sediments deposited over millions of years. The layers are very noticeable and are characterized by their different colors and textures. The strata are usually arranged in horizontal bands and extend along the rock walls surrounding the falls. More in the travel video, see link below.
