Across two continents

04/2021 Our day trip on the Reykjanes Peninsula started with a first stop at the Gardur lighthouse and museum. The old beacon in particular is very nicely located and well worth seeing.

Then we went on to a very often photographed church, the Hvalsneskirkja south of Sandgerdi. From there the journey continued to the bridge over the continents. There you can roughly see a crack, which gives an idea of ??the zone between the North American and Eurasian plates. The place is not very spectacular, but belongs on every tourist program and you can take a nice photo on the bridge.

The Gunnuhver thermal springs were more exciting, an active hot field in which there are several hot water springs and there is a smell of sulfur everywhere.

I can only recommend Café Bryggjan in Grindavik. Here you can get a good warm soup in a great atmosphere. From there you can drive a gravel road along the rough coast. Here are some old shipwrecks that had run aground on the coast in stormy seas in the last few decades. The Hopsnesviti lighthouse is also beautiful. On the headland you also pass abandoned ruins of old settlements and a harbor. In the foggy weather it all fit into the gloomy mood.

Past the hot sulfur springs Krysuvik, Lake Kleifarvatn and stinking fish drying facilities, we drove on to Hafnarfjördur. Here we took a short walk through the city center and the waterfront. The Viking Hotel is striking with its special construction.
