Roman Temple
04/2023 The Temple of Hercules in the Amman Citadel is one of the most impressive relics of Roman antiquity in Jordan. It was built in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Marcus Aurelius and was presumably dedicated to the god Hercules. Of the once monumental complex, only a few mighty columns and remains of the foundations remain today, giving an impression of its original size. Particularly notable is the giant hand of a Hercules statue, indicating that a monumental figure must have once stood here. The temple is considered one of the landmarks of the citadel and a popular photo subject in Amman.
