Propylaeum of the Sanctuary of Artemis

Stairs to the sanctuary

04/2023 The photo shows the entrance to the Temple of Artemis in Gerasa (Jerash, Jordan), one of the most impressive buildings in the ancient city. Built in the 2nd century AD, the temple was dedicated to the goddess Artemis, the patron saint of Gerasa. Particularly impressive is the monumental entrance portal with its massive staircases and Corinthian columns, which opened the way to the actual sanctuary. Even in its ruined state, the building still conveys the city's former importance and splendor.
