Southern Gate in Jerash

Gateway to the historic city of Gerasa

04/2023 The ancient city of Gerasa, now known as Jerash in Jordan, is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the Middle East. Its origins date back to the Hellenistic period, but it flourished under Roman rule from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Impressive temples, theaters, colonnaded streets, and city gates still bear witness to its prosperity.

The photo shows the southern entrance gate, one of the monumental entrances to the city. Built in the 2nd century AD, it served both as a representative entrance and as part of the fortifications. Its three passageways, used for pedestrians and chariots, led directly to the main street, the Cardo Maximus, which ran through the city center. The gate is an impressive example of Roman architecture and still today conveys the first imposing impression that visitors have when entering Gerasa.
