03/2023 If you start from the main entrance of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Petra in Jordan, you will walk through the Siq after just a few kilometers. The deep and narrow gorge is the entrance to the beautiful and impressive temples and tombs of the Nabat er. But even in the gorge it becomes clear what kind of builders the Nabat er were. Along the entire gorge, channels were cut into the rock to collect the water running down the rocks and channel it into cisterns. In the desert, this sophisticated system for obtaining water was a vital requirement.
