Winter trip to Tromso in Norway

Going further north and immersing yourself in wintry Norway in the Arctic Circle is possible in Tromso.

Beautiful Tromso

Beautiful Tromso

11/2024 The city of Tromso may be small, but it still has some highlights that you can easily explore on foot. But be careful, in winter the paths are often very slippery. Spikes that you can strap under your shoes help here. You can get them in almost every shop for a few euros. You can park quite easily at the harbor in the Parkering ved havnen, right next to the cruise ship pier and the Scandic Ishavshotel.

Highlights of the city can be found around the harbor. I like the small kiosk Raketten Bar & Polse, the Radstua Teaterhus, the cathedral, the city library, the colorful houses at the harbor and the Polar Museum.

If you walk or drive over the high bridge from the city center across the fjord, you can discover other highlights. The Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen) is located right on the bridge, although it is not a real bishop's church, i.e. not a cathedral in the strict sense. However, it impresses with its interesting architecture.

If you have a little more time, you can take the cable car up to Storsteinen. This is not particularly cheap, however. If you want, you can also hike up the Sherpa stairs. We did part of that. After about a quarter of the way there is a really great viewpoint with a beautiful view of Tromso.

Ersfjorden

Ersfjorden

A great trip by car is also a trip to the small town of Ersfjordbotn. Here you will find an impressive fjord with a beautiful mountain landscape. There is also a small waterfall here, which in winter sometimes turns into an ice sculpture, which is why it can also be found on Google Maps under the title: The frozen arctic waterfall.

Northern Lights I

Northern Lights I

One of our main reasons for the winter trip to Norway was the Northern Lights. If you want to hunt for Northern Lights, you should definitely download the Norwegian weather app (called YR) and one of the many Aurora apps.

Important requirements are a clear sky and a KP value of at least 4. In our experience, you couldn't see much with 2 or 3. It is also important to be as far away from other light sources as possible. I have marked two points on the map that meet these requirements. Directly near Tromso it is actually much too bright and the light pollution is too great. You can only see Northern Lights here when they are very strong. Taking photos directly above the city is also a challenge. I took the photo here near Skittenelv.

A beautiful spot for northern lights is in the valley Kattfjordeidet, which actually also has a large lake. When we visited, it was frozen and covered in snow. The beautiful thing about this valley is that it is very dark and there are high mountains all around you. This means you can take beautiful photos of the northern lights with great mountain peaks. There are also many parking spaces and parking bays along the country road where you can stop.
