Monument to El Enano

Dancing Dwarf

11/2022 On La Palma there is a tradition of dancing dwarves wearing Napoleon hats. The Monumento a El Enano commemorates this. The statue is a tribute to the famous dancing dwarves of the Bajada festival.

The dwarf dance, consisting of a polka, is a central and important part of the Bajada de la Virgen de Nieves (Descent of the Virgin of the Snows) festival. This festival has been held every five years on La Palma since 1676 and the tradition of dancing dwarves began in 1905. Originally the dwarf dance was a parody of the rich.
