China-Tibet tour part 3 - Gyantse

Round trip through the hinterland of Tibet

05/2010 From Lhasa we travel by bus on our round trip into the Tibetan mountains. From the Kampa-La pass (4794m) we have a beautiful view of the holy lake Yamdrok-Tso (Tibet). Then we climb the provisional highest point of our trip, the Karo-La pass at 5045 meters above sea level. In the evening we reach the city of Gyantse. The next morning we visit the Palkhor monastery in Gyantse, as well as the old town. Then we continue by bus to Shigatse. On the way there we visit a Tibetan farming family and try butter tea and rice wine. In the evening we reach our hotel in Shigatse. The next morning we visit the Tashilhunpo monastery. This monastery is home to the largest Buddha in Tibet. In the afternoon we travel 350km along the Yarlung River back to Lhasa.
