Tashilhunpo Monastery in Xigaze
11/2011 The Tashilhunpo Monastery is one of the six largest monasteries of the Gelugpa - the yellow-hatted monks in Tibet. The monastery is located at the foot of the Drolmari near Shigatse. The monastery was founded by the first Dalai Lama in 1447. The complex was later expanded by the fourth and subsequent Panchen Lamas. Special features of the Tashilhunpo Monastery are the statue of the Maitreya Buddha, as well as the stupas of the various Panchen Lamas. The photo shows the inner courtyard of the monastery.
