03/2008 The Basilica of Nuestra de la Altagracia is in Hig ey, or Higuey, a city in the Dominican Republic. The 80 meter high arch is supposed to represent praying hands. On the name day, January 21st, many locals make a pilgrimage to the cathedral. This was even visited by Pope John Paul II in January 1979. Higuey is about 50 km from Punta Cana. For tourists in the Dominican Republic, the cathedral is usually part of the excursion program on day trips to Santo Domingo.
