My little green cactus
08/2010 This weekend we were in the Palmengarten in Frankfurt Main. With the beautiful weather it was an ideal day trip destination for young and old. You wouldn't expect such a large and beautiful complex in the middle of the big city of Frankfurt, so I was very pleasantly surprised. The complex was founded by the commercial gardener and landscape architect Heinrich Siesmayer in 1868. At that time he bought the plant collection of Duke Adolph of Nassau, who gave up his seat in Wiesbaden. On March 16, 1871, the Palmengarten was opened on a site belonging to the city of Frankfurt. Today there are a number of tropical greenhouses in which different climate zones have been recreated with corresponding plants. For families with children there are several playgrounds, a mini golf course and a miniature railway that runs across the grounds. You can go paddle boating on a large lake or relax on the lawn or a park bench. Definitely a great destination - I'll definitely go there more often. (Adult admission: 5 euros)
