Highlights Dorsoduro Venice Italy
Venice in winter and on New Year's Eve. Here are the best tips for Venice and the districts of Dorsoduro and San Polo.

Over the Academy Bridge to Dorsoduro
07/2015 On the second day, our exploration tour takes us to the Dorsoduro district. From the Hotel Kette, we walk across the Campo Santo Stefano over the Ponte dell Accademia (Academy Bridge) to the Dorsoduro peninsula. There, we first walk past the Guggenheim Museum in the direction of Santa Maria della Salute. From the tip of the peninsula, you have a beautiful view of the Venice skyline. The alleys on the way there are wonderful for strolling from gallery to gallery. Other artists such as glassblowers and stamp carvers also have their shops here. From the steps of Santa Maria della Salute, you have a great view of the main island (San Marco) of Venice. The Campanile di San Marco in particular towers beautifully over the roofs of the surrounding buildings. To the right of it, you can see the Doge's Palace.

A workshop for Venetian gondolas
From the tip of the island at the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute we walk west along the south side of the peninsula. Here you can look out over to the island of Isola della Guidecca. At the Rio de S. Trovaso canal we turn off and follow a smaller canal. The highlight here is a shipyard and workshop for Venetian gondolas, located right at the beginning of the canal. Although there was not much going on at the time, you can see many gondolas in need of repair propped up outside.

Canal at the Chiesa Dei Carmini
At the first bridge we cross the canal and walk up the Rio del Ognissanti and then past the Chiesa Dei Carmini to Campo Santa Margherita. There we find an incredibly good, beautiful, cozy and, for Venice, inexpensive restaurant (Ai Sportivi Pizzeria). After dinner we went on to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The building is one of the best preserved schools in Venice and was once built by the brotherhood of Saint Roch of Montpellier. Admission costs 10 euros per adult. A worthwhile investment for art lovers, because the large hall on the first floor is unbeatable in terms of splendor and paintings. Even I have never seen such an elaborate and artistic interior design.

The Rialto Bridge
After the tour, we continue across Campo San Polo towards the Rialto Bridge. The city's most famous bridge is wide and has two rows of shops on the bridge. Countless tourists crowd in between. Even in winter, this Venice landmark is so crowded that it's better to keep walking. Nevertheless, it's worth taking a moment to enjoy the view of the Grand Canal and take a selfie. We walk south along the other side of the river. Smaller boat docks offer good opportunities for a photo of the Rialto Bridge.

Grand Canal from the Ponte dell Accademia
Just in time for dusk, we stand on the Ponte dell Accademia again to take a nice picture of the Grand Canal and the church of Santa Maria della Salute. The view from the wooden bridge is really one of the best views of the city and the Grand Canal. In the evening, we find a nice Italian restaurant near the Teatro la Fenice (VinoVino Osteria). Warning: unfortunately, almost no restaurant in Venice seems to be marked in the right place on Google Maps! You can find our entire route here on Google Maps: Day trip to Dorsoduro Venice
