Hilltop castle in Jordan

03/2023 Shobak Castle is a hilltop castle that stands on a mountain cone. This seems to be one of the reasons why the fortress, built in 1115, withstood various attacks for so long. It was not until 1189 that the castle fell after a two-year siege. The castles actual name is Montreal, presumably from one of its owners, Maurice of Montreal, who inherited the fortress in 1147. We really enjoyed the visit to this largest fortress, even though it is actually a large ruin with few intact buildings.
